Since 1998, the Animal Shelter has operated under the auspices of the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office and has been praised by each independent evaluator who has inspected the facility. Recent accomplishments at the shelter include:
The floor of the kennel area of the shelter was stripped of its top layer of concrete, then the floors were resealed and painted with epoxy paint to reduce odors and to lower the risk of spreading diseases between animals.
The entire dog kennel area was painted with epoxy paint to provide a sealing top coat, reducing odors and providing assistance with cleaning and disease control.
The outdoor dog kennel runs have been completed and are now in use, thanks to the assistance of the Jacobs Creek Job Corps.
We have developed a relationship with a major retailer who allows us to pick up damaged containers of cat/dog food for feeding our animals.
We have joined with community and business leaders to create a task force focused on building a new animal shelter for the county.
We are working with several animal rescue organizations, allowing us to send animals to other states where they are placed in forever homes.
We are reducing the public's exposure to rabies by enforcing state rabies laws and administering rabies vaccines to all eligible animals leaving the shelter.
The cat room, office area, and public restroom have been re-floored with ceramic tile to enhance the appearance and aid in keeping the shelter areas cleaner.
Our mission is to reduce the number of unwanted cats and dogs, and to ensure the ethical treatment of domesticated animals in the Sullivan County area. This will be accomplished through internal and external adoption programs through which animals are placed in proper homes. Additionally, the mission will be aided by the education of the general public of the need to spay and neuter their animals, the enforcement of Tennessee leash laws, and the investigation of reported cases of animal cruelty.
