The Operations Major is responsible for directing the delivery of primary police services to the public. These services include the enforcement of laws, investigation of crimes, and response to emergencies or unusual events.

The following units are organized under the Operations division to efficiently address these responsibilities:

  • Patrol Division - The Patrol Captain supervises 46 patrol officers and 4 canine officers that patrol and respond to all police complaints. These officers oversee the county 24 hours, 7 days a week, utilizing, four twelve hour shifts.


  • Criminal Investigations - The Criminal Investigations Captain along with 17 detectives and a secretary to investigate crimes of, but not limited to domestic violence, theft, homicide, arson, child abuse and the cases assigned to the Vice/Narcotics investigators. One investigator is also assigned to managing the sex offenders residing within Sullivan County. This unit also has the responsibility of coordinating with the district attorney's office and preparing the cases for prosecution.

  • Communications Division - 18 communications personnel efficiently and enthusiastically answer all police, medical, fire and 911 calls. They have the tremendous responsibility of dispatching emergency personnel to all complaints and emergencies quickly and safely.

  • Special Operations - includes Hostage Negotiations, Mounted Patrol, Underwater Investigations Team, Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT), Fatal Incident Reconstruction Support Team, and Marine Patrol. These teams are called out as needed for crime scene investigations, protection, crowd control, search and rescue, public relations, intelligence, and other assignments outside the normal duty responsibilities.
