By Tennessee statute, the Sheriff or his Deputies are to attend and provide security at all court proceedings in the county.

The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office has the responsibility of securing 10 different courts within the county. The responsibility to provide security does not just include the court rooms themselves. Court Bailiffs are responsible for securing the judges, juries, court staff, and all other associated persons.

To accomplish these tasks, a staff of dedicated personnel work to make the courthouses safe for all persons. Two Lieutenants supervise the staff of Courts and Process personnel. One Court Lieutenant supervises the Blountville and Bristol Courts, and another Court Lieutenant supervises the Kingsport Courts.

When court is not in session, Bailiffs routinely serve process, another statutory requirement of the Sheriff's Office.

During high - risk trials, personnel from the Process, Patrol, and Corrections Divisions are often called upon to provide extra security.
