Jail Ministry

Good News Jail & Prison Ministry is a 46 year old ministry, the sole purpose of which is to provide spiritually mature, motivated men and women to serve as Christian chaplains in correctional facilities nationally and internationally.

In order to meet the spiritual needs of both inmates and staff through ministry that includes evangelism, discipleship, and pastoral attention while facilitating other religious faiths within the guidelines established by law and the individual correctional facility:

Chaplain Kent Pugh is provided to serve as chaplain at the Sullivan County Jail by the Good News Jail & Prison Ministry. He also oversees the Chaplain's Corps for the patrol side of the Sheriff's Office. Seven volunteer chaplains are on call several days each month to serve the needs arising from the jail as well as those of our officers. The chaplains are utilized throughout the year to assist the road officers in making notifications to the family members of victims of traffic fatalities, suicides, and other tragedies resulting in death.

The murals on the walls in the chapel areas at the Sullivan County Jail were painted by one of the inmates who volunteered to use his talent in this way because he wanted to make a lasting contribution to our agency.

During 2007 at the Sullivan County Jail, there were 262 worship services and 130 Bible classes. There were 324 individual counseling sessions and 7,260 individual Bible lessons completed.
